A GEO consultant (Generative Engine Optimization) improves a brand's visibility inside the answers of generative AI: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude. GEO is SEO with an AI add-on: the fundamentals of Google search optimization, extended with optimization for answer engines.
In practice, a GEO expert works on three layers: the website's SEO foundations, how readable its content is for LLM crawlers, and the brand's presence in the sources AI models consult to build their answers.

Your prospects no longer just type queries into Google. They ask ChatGPT "Which provider would you recommend for X?", and the AI answers with two or three names. If your brand isn't on that shortlist, you don't exist in that conversation, whatever your Google ranking.
AI visibility follows a different logic from classic search optimization. Ranking on page one of Google does not guarantee being cited by ChatGPT. A good website isn't enough if LLMs can't read it properly: two of the four major LLMs simply ignore poorly configured JavaScript websites. And 50% of the sources cited by AI don't overlap with Google's top 10.
