Key takeaways
- Ahrefs remains the closest alternative for pure SEO and backlinks; SE Ranking offers the best feature-to-price ratio (from around €55/month).
- Since the acquisition was completed by Adobe on 28 April 2026 ($1.9B), SEMrush is shifting toward an enterprise “brand visibility” model: the real question is no longer price, but the product roadmap.
- A classic SEO alternative (keywords, audit, rankings) and an AI visibility tool do not do the same job: don’t confuse the two needs.
- The right choice depends on the job you hire the tool for: backlinks, rank tracking, technical audit, or presence in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.
You’re looking for a SEMrush alternative because the price keeps climbing, the interface overwhelms you, or the Adobe acquisition worries you. Three legitimate reasons. Adobe completed its acquisition of SEMrush on 28 April 2026 for $1.9 billion, and the tool is now moving toward an enterprise brand-visibility model. Before you migrate, ask one question: what concrete job do you hire your SEO tool to do? The answer decides your alternative.

What is the best SEMrush alternative in 2026?
The best SEMrush alternative depends on your primary use. Ahrefs replaces SEMrush for SEO and backlinks. SE Ranking covers 80% of everyday needs at roughly a third of the price. Screaming Frog beats SEMrush on technical audits. No single tool replicates the entire suite: the right move is to align your choice with the real job you give the platform.
Three families of needs come up repeatedly with my SMB and e-commerce clients:
- Classic SEO: keyword research, rank tracking, on-page audit, competitor analysis.
- Link building: depth and quality of the backlink index, competitor link-profile analysis.
- Visibility in generative AI: your brand’s presence in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews.
SEMrush tried to do everything in one interface. The most effective alternatives, by contrast, excel at one specialty. As Ahmed le Marketeur sums up after testing them on client work: unlike Semrush which tries to do everything, the best competitors often have a clear specialty
(Ahmed le Marketeur, April 2026).
Why look for a SEMrush alternative now?
Three factors push users to explore other options in 2026, and the last one changes the game.
Price. SEMrush starts around €130/month, with a modular model where advanced features come as paid add-ons. For a freelancer or a small business, the investment becomes hard to justify against tools covering the essentials at €40-55/month.
Complexity. Dozens of modules coexist in the interface. If you only need keyword research and audits, you also pay for features you’ll never open.
The Adobe acquisition. This is the real signal of 2026. The deal closed on 28 April 2026 at $12 per share, or $1.9 billion, and SEMrush became an Adobe subsidiary. Adobe plans to integrate it into its “brand visibility” suite alongside Adobe Experience Manager, LLM Optimizer and Brand Concierge. Anil Chakravarthy, president of Adobe’s Digital Experience Business, frames the bet: brand visibility is being reshaped by generative AI
(Adobe, 28 April 2026 press release). In practice, the tool now targets large GEO-focused accounts. For an SMB, the pricing and feature roadmap becomes uncertain.

Ahrefs: the best alternative for pure SEO
Ahrefs is the alternative most often cited by professionals to replace SEMrush on SEO. Its backlink index is recognized as the most complete and freshest on the market, superior to SEMrush on that specific point. Where SEMrush covers all of digital marketing, Ahrefs concentrates its power on SEO: backlinks, keyword research, competitor analysis and technical audit.
Strengths: a very complete Keywords Explorer, Content Explorer to spot content opportunities, and free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for site owners. Limits: no advertising or social media modules, and pricey multi-user plans.
My consultant’s advice: if your daily work revolves around link building and organic competitor analysis, Ahrefs isn’t a compromise, it’s an upgrade. For combined SEO + Google Ads, SEMrush kept an edge few tools match.
SE Ranking: the best value for money
SE Ranking has become the go-to for freelancers and small agencies who want a complete suite without the SEMrush price. Its main plan includes rank tracking, unlimited keyword research, competitor analysis, backlink analysis and site audit, the core of the SEMrush suite, below the SEMrush Pro rate.
A distinctive 2026 asset: SE Ranking offers AI search tracking as an add-on, covering AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Many alternatives still treat AI visibility as a roadmap promise; SE Ranking has already shipped it.
Its limit: a shallower backlink database than Ahrefs, and the absence of some advanced modules (advertising, social media). For most of an SMB’s daily SEO use cases, the trade-off is heavily favorable.
SEMrush vs an AI alternative: two tools, two jobs
Replacing SEMrush with Ahrefs or SE Ranking solves your SEO need. It does not solve your visibility in AI-generated answers. These are two distinct jobs.
A classic SEO tool measures where you rank on Google’s result pages. An AI visibility tool measures whether — and how — your brand is cited when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or an AI Overview a question. The second doesn’t follow from the first: a page ranking well in SEO can be entirely absent from generative answers, and vice versa.
The sign this need is becoming central: Adobe bought SEMrush precisely for its GEO layer. Adobe’s data shows that AI traffic to U.S. retail sites rose 269% year over year (March 2026) (Adobe, 28 April 2026 press release). When giants invest $1.9 billion to measure brand visibility in AI, the channel has become real.
This is exactly the job Cockpyt AI does: measuring your brand’s presence in generative engines and identifying the competitors cited in your place. As co-founder of the tool, I use it in my engagements to cover the blind spot that neither SEMrush nor its classic SEO alternatives truly address for an SMB.
How to choose your SEMrush alternative in 4 steps
Before you cancel your subscription, follow a simple method. Migrating isn’t a subscription decision, it’s an operations decision.
1. List what you actually do with SEMrush
Write down every concrete use: keyword research, rank tracking, audit, backlinks, client reporting. Many users pay for a full suite while only using three modules.
2. Identify your dominant need
Backlinks and organic competition? Ahrefs. Tight budget and versatility? SE Ranking. Pure technical audit? Screaming Frog. Presence in AI? A dedicated AI visibility tool.
3. Build a stack rather than a single tool
The best replacement is often not one tool but a specialized combination, frequently cheaper than SEMrush alone. Example: SE Ranking for everyday SEO, Screaming Frog for crawling, free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for your inbound backlinks.
4. Test export and integration before switching
Check that your reports, exports and connections (Looker Studio, API) work before cutting SEMrush. Never assume parity because the product pages look alike.

Should you get guidance rather than a new tool?
Switching tools doesn’t change your strategy. A tool measures; it doesn’t decide which keywords to target, which content to produce, or how to appear in AI. If you’re torn between five alternatives, it often signals a missing roadmap, not missing software.
I’m Florian Zorgnotti, an independent SEO and GEO consultant. I help SMBs, e-commerce businesses and project owners who want durable visibility on Google and in generative engines, without depending on an over-engineered, add-on-billed platform. My approach: pick the right stack for your real need, then build a content strategy that holds over time.
FAQ: SEMrush alternatives
What is the cheapest SEMrush alternative?
Ubersuggest and Mangools are among the cheapest paid alternatives, from around $29/month. For free, the Google Search Console + Google Analytics 4 combination gives access to real Google performance data and covers much of a starting SMB’s needs.
Is Ahrefs really better than SEMrush?
On backlinks and pure SEO, yes: its link index is considered more complete and fresher. SEMrush remained more versatile across digital marketing (advertising, social media). The best depends on your dominant use, not an absolute ranking.
Does the Adobe acquisition change anything for me?
Yes, over time. The acquisition completed in April 2026 steers SEMrush toward an enterprise brand-visibility offer integrated with Adobe tools, which introduces uncertainty around pricing and feature evolution for an SMB.
Can SE Ranking really replace SEMrush?
For the vast majority of daily SEO use cases, yes: rank tracking, audit, keyword research and backlink analysis, all below the SEMrush Pro rate. Its main limit is a shallower backlink database and the absence of some advanced modules.
Is an SEO alternative enough to be visible in ChatGPT?
No. An SEO tool measures your Google ranking, not your presence in generative AI answers. Tracking whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or AI Overviews cite your brand requires a dedicated AI visibility tool.
Is it better to have one tool or several?
Often several. A stack of two or three specialized tools covers your needs better than a single suite, and frequently costs less than SEMrush alone.
How do I migrate without losing my data history?
Export your reports and history before cancelling, check integrations on the new tool, then run both in parallel for a few weeks to validate real parity before cutting the subscription.
