SEO is not dead: it remains the largest acquisition channel worldwide by volume. The Semrush study published in 2026, covering billions of visits across more than 50,000 sites and 17 industries, establishes that organic search produced over 1 trillion visits in 2025, with modest annual growth. No other channel comes close to that volume.
The word “dead” actually covers three distinct phenomena that alarmist articles consistently conflate. The first is falling click-through rates on certain queries. The second is traffic redistribution toward new conversational interfaces. The third is Google’s algorithmic tightening, which has nothing to do with generative AI. All three movements are real, none of them signals the end of organic search optimisation.
The distinction that matters for a business owner: your site is not losing visibility, it is losing clicks on part of your queries. A page can hold position 1 in Search Console while its sessions drop 30%, because the answer was displayed above it. The diagnosis “SEO no longer works” is almost always a badly framed diagnosis.
In my view, “is SEO dead” is a journalist’s question, not a business owner’s question. The right question is: what share of my strategic queries is exposed to generated answers, and what share is not? That is measurable in an afternoon, and it completely reshapes investment priorities.
What the 2024 forecasts predicted, and what actually happened
The most quoted predictions were off by a factor of ten. In February 2024, Gartner published a forecast that went viral: traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026, absorbed by chatbots and virtual agents. Two years later, aggregated measurements on organic traffic show a decline of roughly 2.5% between February 2024 and late 2025 (Previsible analysis relayed by Search Engine Land, 2025-2026).
The gap comes from a scope confusion. Gartner was talking about query volume, not outbound traffic. And the forecast assumed substitution — users abandoning Google for ChatGPT — whereas the data shows addition: 77% of US consumers who use AI also rely on traditional search within the same decision-making process (Semrush, 2026).

This numerical reading shifts the debate. AI-driven traffic grows fast (+66% year on year), but from a very small base: under one billion monthly visits, against tens of billions for organic. The movement is real, the tipping point has not happened.

Exposure to generative AI varies by a factor of 17 depending on the sector. BrightEdge data collected between February 2025 and February 2026 shows that 88% of healthcare queries trigger an AI Overview, against 82% in B2B technology, 83% in education, and only 5% in finance. An industrial SME owner and a health content publisher do not live the same reality, even when they read the same alarmist article.
The second sorting factor is intent type. Informational queries (“how to”, “what is”) get absorbed first, because they match exactly what the models answer best. Transactional queries (“quote”, “price”, “buy”) remain markedly less affected: Google retains an economic interest in sending those clicks to its advertisers.
The three risk profiles
- High exposure — sector with a high AI Overview rate (healthcare, education, B2B tech) and mostly informational traffic. Traffic drops, citation becomes the priority objective.
- Medium exposure — mixed sector, traffic split between informational and transactional. Classic SEO holds on commercial pages while AI erodes the blog.
- Low exposure — local services, finance, queries with strong purchase intent and geographic anchoring. SEO remains the dominant lever, GEO becomes a head-start differentiator.
In my view, this is the point 90% of “SEO is dead” articles miss: they average situations that have nothing in common. Across my client work in Nice, a tradesperson positioned on local transactional queries has barely moved in two years, while a health content site lost a third of its sessions. Same Google, same period, two opposite realities.
What is the future of SEO against generative engines?
The future of SEO plays out on a shift of objective: moving from the click to the citation. A generative engine does not rank pages, it selects passages it judges reliable, cited and extractable. Your page can sit at position 1 without ever being picked up in the generated answer — and the reverse holds too.
This shift does not make the fundamentals obsolete, it reprioritises them. Indexability remains the absolute prerequisite: a page invisible to Googlebot is invisible to AI. Topical authority and trust signals take precedence over content volume. Content structure becomes decisive, because a model extracts blocks, not whole articles.

- Topical authority — deep coverage of one subject rather than scattering across high-volume keywords.
- Extractable content — direct answer at the top of each section, hard numbers, named sources, lists and tables.
- Evidence of experience — field feedback, proprietary data, elements a model cannot generate on its own.
- Citation tracking — monitoring brand presence in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, alongside Google positions.

How to test your own exposure in 30 minutes
This diagnosis requires no paid tool. It gives you a first numerical reading of your real situation, to set against the generalities you read elsewhere.
- Export your top 20 queries from Google Search Console, over the last 16 months, sorted by impressions.
- Type each one into Google and note whether an AI Overview appears. You get your personal exposure rate, to compare against the 48% global average.
- Classify those queries as informational or transactional. High exposure on informational queries is your priority risk zone.
- Compare impressions and clicks on those same queries between 2024 and 2026. A stable position with a collapsing CTR confirms a generated-answer effect, not a ranking loss.
- Ask your 10 customer questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Note whether your brand appears, and which competitors get cited instead of you.
Step five is the one that produces the strongest reactions in client meetings. Discovering that a competitor is systematically recommended on your core queries unlocks a budget faster than any traffic curve.

Should you still invest in SEO in 2026?
Yes, and the reason is structural: there is no visibility inside generative AI without a solid SEO base. Models rely on indexes and web sources. A site that is poorly indexed, slow or technically blocked enters no generated answer at all.
The budget trade-off looks different from “SEO or GEO”. Across my engagements, the split that works looks like this: technical foundations and authority stay pure SEO, editorial production integrates extractability constraints, and a limited share of budget goes to citation tracking in LLMs. GEO is not an extra channel to fund, it is a layer of requirements added to what you already do.
The real risk in 2026 is not investing in SEO. It is investing in 2019-era SEO: content produced by volume, high-traffic keywords with no commercial intent, no evidence of expertise. The Google updates of 2025 and 2026 severely devalued those site profiles, independently of generative AI.

Will SEO disappear by 2030?
Nothing in the current data supports that hypothesis. Generative engines consume indexed web pages: as long as a system needs sources, optimising those sources remains a profession. The name and the metrics will likely change before the discipline itself does.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. GEO adds an optimisation layer aimed at generated answers, built on existing SEO foundations. A site invisible to Googlebot stays invisible to the models. The logical sequence is SEO first, GEO second.
How long does SEO take to show results in 2026?
Timelines have not changed significantly: three to six months for measurable movement on low-competition queries, six to twelve months in contested markets. LLM citation can appear faster on niche subjects, because the volume of competing sources there is low.
Are AI Overviews rolled out in France?
The French rollout was announced for 2026 and progresses in waves, with no detailed public timetable per query type. The high coverage rates quoted in international studies concern mainly the US market: the French rate remains lower to date.
