Key takeaways:
- An AI Overview that doesn’t show comes down to three causes: your country, your settings (Google account or browser), or a Google decision tied to the query.
- In France, the rollout began in summer 2026: the absence is often normal and temporary, as display expands gradually.
- Google deliberately withholds the AI Overview on sensitive queries (health, shopping, breaking news, local search): it’s a choice, not a bug.
- Turning the block back on or off runs through Search Labs, Google account settings, or the
udm=14filter in your browser.

A missing AI Overview is nothing unusual: more than half of searches trigger none, even in countries where the feature has run for two years. As an SEO consultant based in Nice since 2016, here are the three families of causes and their settings.
Why isn’t the AI Overview showing? The 3 main reasons
An AI Overview doesn’t show for one of three reasons, by frequency: your location (the feature isn’t, or isn’t yet, active in your country), your settings (an option in your Google account or browser blocks it), or the nature of your query (Google decides not to show a summary).
The good news: in most cases it’s neither a bug nor a problem on your device. AI Overview display depends on an algorithm that assesses, query by query, whether a summary adds real value. The table below sums up the three families.
| Cause | Typical sign | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Location | No AI Overview, whatever the query | Wait for rollout / enable Search Labs |
| Account / browser settings | Absent for you, present elsewhere | Check Search Labs, Google account, udm=14 filter |
| Query type | Absent on some queries only | Rephrase as a complex question (nothing to “fix”) |
Reason 1: you’re in France, where the rollout just started
In France, a missing AI Overview is first explained by timing. France was long excluded for legal, not technical, reasons: the neighbouring rights law (2019) requires Google to compensate news publishers whose content it reuses.
That blocker lifted in summer 2026. Google confirmed to French publishers, in a letter dated 29 June 2026 (revealed by Ouest-France, confirmed by Les Échos and Le Monde), the rollout of AI Overview and AI Mode in France before 23 September 2026. Display is expanding gradually: if you don’t see the AI Overview yet, the rollout likely hasn’t reached your account or your queries.
Proof that language isn’t the barrier: the AI Overview already runs in French in Belgium and Switzerland since March 2025. A French-speaking user outside France could see it well before you.
Reason 2: your account or browser settings block it
If the AI Overview shows for others but not for you, a setting is at play. Display depends on your Google account, on Search Labs and sometimes on a filter applied by your browser. Here’s what to check.
Search Labs and Google account
The AI Overview is sometimes tied to a Search Labs experiment enabled or disabled on your Google account. Open Search Labs (the flask icon in Google Search), check the state of the AI Overview experiment, and make sure you’re signed in to the right Google account. A signed-out or different account can explain the absence.
The “Web” filter (udm=14 parameter)
Many users have deliberately set their browser to show only “Web” results, via the udm=14 URL parameter. This filter removes the AI Overview and other enriched blocks. If you or an extension set this up, the AI Overview will never appear. Remove the custom “Web” search engine from your Chrome settings to bring it back.
Extensions and alternative search engine
A blocking extension (like “Hide Google AI Overviews” or a content blocker) removes the block. Likewise, a default engine such as DuckDuckGo, Brave Search or a differently configured Firefox won’t show Google’s AI Overview. Check your default search engine and temporarily disable your extensions to test.
- To bring it back: reconnect your Google account, disable the
udm=14filter, turn off blocking extensions, switch back to Google as default engine. - To remove it for good: conversely, enable the “Web” filter, install a dedicated extension or change your search engine.
Reason 3: Google chose not to show it for your query
Even where the feature is active, Google doesn’t show an AI Overview on every query. The algorithm assesses whether a summary adds real value, and abstains otherwise. The absence is then a deliberate choice, not a failure.
Four families of queries rarely, if ever, trigger an AI Overview:
- Sensitive (YMYL) queries: health, finance, legal topics. Google stays cautious to avoid spreading a wrong answer. Only 11% of YMYL queries show an AI Overview (BrightEdge, 2026).
- Transactional and shopping queries: to avoid disrupting the purchase decision, Google favours product listings and ads. The trigger rate drops to around 3%.
- Breaking news: Google shows a “Top Stories” carousel rather than an AI summary, to favour freshness (about 6% trigger rate on very newsy queries).
- Local and very short queries: “restaurant near me”, “weather”, or a single ambiguous word trigger a local pack or a dedicated widget, not an AI Overview (4 to 8% for local).
Conversely, complex, informational questions — “how”, “why”, “what is” — are the most likely to show a summary. Rephrasing your search as a detailed question is often enough to make the block appear.
Note: Google also varies display over time. A BrightEdge study (October 2025) observed the sudden removal of 57% of AI Overviews during a test spike, before stabilising. A block present yesterday may vanish today: Google adjusts its thresholds continuously.
AI Overview missing: is it a problem for your visibility?
For a user, a missing AI Overview is neutral, even convenient: you reach the links directly. For a business, the question is different: when the block shows on your target queries, being cited beats being absent.
The reason is measured: organic CTR drops 61% on informational queries when an AI Overview shows (Seer Interactive, 2025). But brands cited in the block recover 35% more clicks than uncited ones. The goal isn’t for the AI Overview to disappear, but for your site to become a source when it appears.
FAQ: the AI Overview that doesn’t show
Why don’t I see an AI Overview when my colleague does?
Display depends on the Google account, Search Labs settings, browser and exact query. A different account, “Web” filter or extension is enough to explain the gap. Google also personalises display based on history and location.
Is the AI Overview available in France?
Yes, since summer 2026. Google confirmed the rollout of AI Overview and AI Mode in France before 23 September 2026. Display expands gradually, which is why it may still be missing on some queries or accounts.
How do I make the AI Overview reappear?
Reconnect your Google account, check Search Labs, remove the udm=14 filter from your browser settings, disable blocking extensions and switch back to Google as default engine. Rephrasing as a complex question also helps.
Is it a bug if the AI Overview doesn’t show?
Rarely. In most cases, Google chooses not to show a summary for your query (sensitive topic, shopping, news, local search). More than half of searches show no AI Overview, even where the feature is active.
Why does the AI Overview disappear on a query where it used to appear?
Google continuously adjusts its display thresholds and tests heavily. An AI Overview present one day may be removed the next if the algorithm judges it no longer adds enough value, especially during shopping periods.
Can I permanently disable the AI Overview?
There’s no single official button. You can bypass it via the “Web” filter (udm=14), a dedicated extension, Search Labs, or by switching search engine (DuckDuckGo, Brave). These methods may change if Google updates its interface.
