How much does a GEO strategy cost in 2026?

Key takeaways: A GEO project sits around a 5,000 EUR median budget in France, 4,000 EUR for a small business and 7,000 EUR for a mid-sized company. Billing it separately from SEO means paying twice for work that overlaps by 80%, when an integrated engagement at 900 to 3,000 EUR per month covers both surfaces with the same production.

The median GEO project budget in France stands at 5,000 EUR, across 63 analysed projects. That figure covers realities so different it will not tell you what you should pay.

What is the price of a GEO strategy in 2026?

The median sits at 5,000 EUR per project and the mean at 12,300 EUR, across 63 real GEO projects analysed in France by La Fabrique du Net. The gap between median and mean shows a distribution pulled upward by a few large deployments, while most projects cluster at entry-level budgets.

One clarification is missing from most published price lists: these amounts are project budgets, not monthly retainers. Confusing the two shifts the estimate by a factor of twelve. A 5,000 EUR project spread over six months means roughly 830 EUR per month, not 5,000 EUR per month.

Project budget bracket Share of projects What it covers
Under 5,000 EUR 37% Diagnosis and initial optimisation
5,000 to 10,000 EUR 29% Sustained GEO optimisation
10,000 to 25,000 EUR 22% Combined GEO and SEO strategy
25,000 EUR and above 12% Large-scale visibility programme

The median budget varies mostly by company size: 4,000 EUR for a small business (base of 19 projects), 7,000 EUR for a mid-sized company (25 projects), 17,500 EUR for a large group (8 projects). In Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, the observed median reaches 8,750 EUR across 10 projects, against 10,000 EUR in the Paris region.

Should you pay for GEO separately from SEO?

No, in the vast majority of cases. This is the budget decision that weighs most, and the one I see companies get wrong most often.

The market offers two models. GEO as a separate service, billed between 500 and 2,000 EUR per month, with an AI presence audit, monitoring and dedicated recommendations. GEO integrated into SEO, where generative visibility practices are part of the content and structured data strategy, with no extra line item.

The technical reason is simple: the foundation is shared. Google states it in its July 2026 documentation, optimising for generative features is still SEO, and the same fundamentals apply. Indexing, technical quality, original content, brand authority: those blocks serve both surfaces.

What SEO and GEO share

  • Technical audit, indexing and site performance.
  • Substantial content production and topical coverage.
  • Structured data and entity identity.
  • Brand authority and external mentions.

What is specific to GEO

  • Presence tracking in generative engines and share of voice.
  • Structuring into self-contained sections for extraction.
  • Monitoring the third-party sources feeding the answers.

In my view, the genuinely GEO-specific portion represents around 20% of the work. Billing that 20% as a standalone service at 1,500 EUR per month, on top of an SEO engagement, means paying twice for the same foundation. That is a commercial argument, not a technical necessity. The question to ask a provider is not “do you offer GEO?” but “what does your GEO offer contain that your SEO offer does not?”. If the answer is a dashboard, you are paying for reporting.

What are the cost components of a GEO strategy?

Four components make up most of the budget, with very uneven weights.

Content

This is the dominant item, often 50 to 60% of the budget. Content designed to be cited requires verified primary sources, a structure of self-contained sections, and field experience models cannot produce on their own. Expect 1 to 2 substantial articles per month in a standard engagement, not ten short pieces.

Technical work and structured data

Schema.org markup, entity identity in the Knowledge Graph, snippet eligibility, performance. This item is usually handled early then maintained, making it a decreasing cost over time.

Authority and mentions

Credible external mentions weigh in how models select sources. The median price of a backlink in France stands at 87 EUR excluding tax, the mean around 160 EUR. A word of caution: Google explicitly filters inauthentic mentions through the anti-spam systems that also feed generative features. Buying mentions in volume is wasted budget.

Tracking and tools

This is the most poorly estimated item. Cumulative professional subscriptions easily exceed 1,000 EUR per month for an agency serving several clients, but a small business does not need that stack. An AI visibility tracking tool sits between a few tens and a few hundred euros monthly depending on the number of tracked queries.

On that last item, this is the need I set out to cover by co-founding Cockpyt AI, which tracks a brand’s presence in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini with share of voice against cited competitors, from 29 EUR per month for 10 tracked queries.

How much should you invest based on your profile?

Three profiles cover most situations I encounter.

The freelancer or local small business. Observed median budget of 4,000 EUR per project. The priority lever is not mass content, but the business listing, clean structured data and two to three substantial pieces per year on the questions your customers actually ask. A light monthly engagement suffices, complemented by in-house work.

The mid-sized company in a competitive market. Median budget of 7,000 EUR per project. Content becomes the main item, with regular production and share-of-voice tracking against cited competitors. This is the profile where a structured monthly engagement is fully justified.

The company competing nationally. Beyond 10,000 EUR per project, with a combined GEO and SEO strategy. Tracking becomes daily on strategic queries, and content production industrialises without losing source quality.

On my own engagements, a complete package covering SEO and generative visibility practices sits between 900 and 3,000 EUR per month depending on scope, sector competition and content volume. GEO does not appear as a separate line: it is part of how I build content and structured data.

Is GEO profitable for a small or mid-sized business?

The answer depends on a calculation few providers state honestly: what a customer is worth to you, and how many citations it takes to generate one.

Two data points frame the reasoning. Gartner anticipates a 25% drop in traditional search volume by the end of 2026. And exposure to generative surfaces is already massive: Google stated in May 2026 that AI Overviews reached more than 2 billion people every month worldwide.

The practical calculation rests on three elements. Your average order value or customer lifetime value. The number of strategic queries you want to be cited on. The monthly cost of the engagement. If your customer value exceeds a few thousand euros, a single client won per quarter pays for a 900 EUR monthly engagement.

In my view, the most common analytical error is treating GEO as additional marketing spend, when the budget shifts rather than adds. A company already investing in SEO does not need a second budget: it needs its current provider to work both surfaces. One investing nothing does face a real entry cost. The genuine trade-off is not “GEO or no GEO”, it is “does my current provider produce citable content, or filler”. That question is settled by reading three articles they produced.

Which warning signs should you watch for in a GEO quote?

Five signals justify refusing a proposal, whatever its price.

  • A citation guarantee. Nobody controls generative model outputs. An agency promising a spot in ChatGPT or Gemini is selling a guarantee it cannot honour.
  • No measurement of the current state. Without a baseline of your present AI visibility, no progress is demonstrable. The initial audit is not optional.
  • GEO entirely disconnected from SEO. The two reinforce each other. An offer treating them as unrelated disciplines bills the same foundation twice.
  • Claimed “internal” metrics. Google states that no third-party tool has access to its ranking systems. A provider claiming otherwise has not read the documentation.
  • A pitch made entirely of acronyms. GEO remains foundational work on content, data and sources. With no concrete method described, there is no service.

A sixth check is worth running before signing: test the provider itself. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini which GEO consultant or agency to consult in your sector. If the one pitching you appears nowhere, the question deserves to be asked directly.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a standalone GEO audit cost?

Audits observed on the French market range between 1,500 and 3,000 EUR. A 1,500 EUR audit typically covers 10 to 15 tracked queries, an initial share-of-voice report and a prioritised list of recommendations. Below 1,000 EUR, the scope often narrows to an automated report.

Does GEO cost more than SEO?

No, it generally costs less, because the discipline is young and its methodology still forming. The 5,000 EUR GEO median per project remains below mature SEO budgets. That gap will narrow as methods standardise.

How long before GEO results appear?

On an established, already-indexed domain, an optimised page can be picked up as a citation within weeks of publication. On a recent domain, expect several months of sustained effort. No provider can guarantee a timeline, as model responses are not deterministic.

Can you do GEO without a budget?

Partially. Search Console is free, manual tests in neutral conditions too, and restructuring your existing content only costs time. What costs money is regular production of substantial content and automated tracking across many queries.

Do you need to pay for an AI visibility tracking tool?

Not to start. Search Console covers exposure on Google’s side, and a weekly manual test suffices across ten or so queries. A paid tool becomes useful for share of voice against competitors and automating tracking beyond twenty queries.

Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency for GEO?

Generally yes, at comparable scope. Beyond 3,000 EUR per month, part of the budget covers the agency’s commercial structure rather than deliverables. For a small or mid-sized business, an independent consultant often offers a better ratio between cost and work actually produced.
